The Mind of Watergate, 1980

“The Watergate complex” is more than a group of apartment buildings in Washington.  It is a complex, I suggest, in the mind of man.  “The Watergate” with its ramifications is as much a complex as “the Oedipus.”  From each complex, mechanisms can be seen undiluted which can then be understood in more attenuated and disguised forms.  It is no coincidence that in the wake of Watergate not one or a few men, but our entire country and our times are being called sick.  What is meant by "sick" is obscure and disturbing...It refers to a problem of living with accepted values, of maintaining integrity, not in a lofty but in a common sense.
