On Friendship

Tue, Jan 1, 1963

Rangell's essay, "On Friendship," ends with this thought, "For life's bright and dark periods are determined, in the long run, not from the height of the intense love peaks but from the level of the baseline, the likes rather than the loves.  Among these, friendships are a major indicator."  "On Friendship" was published in The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association 1963; 11: 3-54.  Attached here is Rangell's diagram of the development of friendship in a boy, from page 34.  A full copy of the article is available at:  http://apa.sagepub.com/content/11/1/3.long .
